Traffic Crash Results in Fatality
City of Sevierville Police Officers and Firefighters responded to a single vehicle traffic crash on Interstate 40 west Saturday evening, July 4, 2015.
The crash was reported at approximately 7:20PM. According to SPD Officer Chris Carter, witnesses said it appeared a 2001 Honda Odyssey began changing from the right travel lane to the center travel lane, but then abruptly moved back to the right before the driver lost control of the vehicle. The Honda left the roadway on the right side and rolled before coming to rest near mile marker 406.
Due to the severity of the crash, SPD Traffic Reconstructionists were called to the scene to conduct an investigation.
The crash apparently caused the death of passenger Milan Gupta, 46-years old from Cherry Hill, New Jersey who was partially ejected during the crash. Another passenger, 6-year old Shreya Gupta, was ejected and suffered serious injuries. She was transported by the Sevier County Ambulance Service (SCAS) to the University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC).
Also transported to UTMC by the SCAS with what appeared to be minor injuries were the driver, 43-year old Monika Gupta; a 13-year old girl and an 11-year old boy.
The crash remains under investigation.
