Fire Department offers Thanksgiving cooking safety tips

Posted 11-22-24.

The Sevierville Fire Department wishes everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving! The holidays are a special time for celebrating, visiting, and enjoying time with friends and family. Folks gather in the home and kitchens are bustling with activity.

Unfortunately, the holiday season also comes with a spike in home fires and injuries, and the vast majority are cooking related. So, whether you’re frying a turkey, baking a ham, or something else entirely, kitchen safety should be a top priority. By remembering some simple safety precautions, you can make your holiday celebration safer for you and your loved ones.

Try out these recipes for a safer celebration!
• Use turkey fryer’s outside and 10 feet away from any structure.
• Keep all flammable items like towels and hot pads away from stove tops.
• Avoid wearing loose fitting clothing that can catch fire.
• Never leave your cooking unattended.
• Set timers.
• Keep kids and pets away from stoves, ovens, grills, fryers, or anything else that is hot.
• Have an appropriate fire extinguisher on hand.
• Clean up any spills and messes promptly.

The Sevierville Fire Department will be posting daily safe cooking tips and procedures next week on their Facebook page at seviervillefiredepartment and on the City of Sevierville website at https://seviervilletn.org/index.php/sfd-home.html.
