May is National Mental Health Month

Posted 05-05-20.

Since 1949, May has been observed as Mental Health Month in the United States to increase mental health awareness. One in five people will experience a mental illness during their lifetime, and we all face challenges in life that can impact our mental health.

“In law enforcement, we encounter persons with mental health challenges pretty much on a daily basis,” said SPD Chief Joseph Manning. “And the COVID-19 pandemic is resulting in millions of people being faced with a level of stress and uncertainty that we’ve never dealt with before.”

The Sevierville Police Department asks our community to pay extra attention this month to our family, friends and neighbors and to reach out to them when we see a need.
