SPD warns parents and caregivers about non-compliant, unsafe child car safety seats
Posted 03-31-25.
The Sevierville Police Department is warning parents and caregivers about the presence of non-compliant and therefore unsafe child car safety seats. SPD officers have seen several car seats lately that do not meet federal standards. These non-compliant car seats have mostly been purchased online and parents are likely unaware that their car seat may be unsafe and non-compliant.
The predominant safety concern about these noncompliant car seats is that some do not have a required retainer/chest clip to hold the two harness straps together. Without the chest clip holding the harnesses together, the child may be ejected during a crash. Federal standards (FMVSS) REQUIRE a retainer/chest clip and a 5-point harness.
When shopping for a child car safety seat online, watch for the following red flags which indicate non-compliant and unsafe seats, or possible counterfeit seats.
1. Advertising does not state that the seat has been approved for use in the USA.
2. There is no manual or the manual is very short and general, lacking specific information and instructions.
3. There is no retainer/chest clip and/or no 5-point harness.
4. Advertising/manual does not include the height and weight restrictions for the car seat.
5. The car seat has a logo or symbol but lacks the manufacturer name.
6. The car seat is offered at a significant savings from similar model car seats.
7. The seat does not include the required FMVSS labeling requirements (see mandatory labeling information below).
