What Do I Do in an Emergency?

Call 911. The Police or Fire Departments can usually respond to your call. If necessary, these departments will call Public Works for assistance.

What kind of advice can you give me for driving in snowy conditions?

Of course, the best advice to heed during a snow storm is to stay off the road unless travel is absolutely necessary. The more traffic that is on the road, the harder it is for road crews to do their job, thus slowing down the snow removal effort.

However, here is some advice on what to do when you see snow removal equipment on the roadway:
◾Maintain a safe distance to avoid collisions and damage from flying salt or sand.
◾Snow removal equipment may have to slow or stop without warning. Be ready for the unexpected!
◾Turn on your headlights for additional visibility, but always assume that the operator cannot see you.
◾Plowing snow on a multi-lane roadway is often done in tandem (more than one snow plow at a time). Please give them plenty of room and never pass a snow plow!
◾Snow plows usually leave a ridge of snow to the right, so avoid making right turns directly behind a snow plow.
◾Salt flying from the salt spreader will damage car finish, so it’s best to let the snow removal equipment do its job and stay away from it.

Who is Responsible for Clearing Driveway Aprons?

Property owners or residents are responsible for clearing their driveway entrance/exit. Please remember, we will continue to plow snow until the street is clear or safe for motorists. We realize that this can be frustrating to the resident; however we simply do not have the resources to clear thousands of driveway aprons.

Who Clears Sidewalks?

Citizens are encouraged to clear sidewalks in front of their homes or businesses, but please do not put snow into the street. The City generally does not clear sidewalks, as our limited resources are concentrated on streets.
