Deputy Fire Chief - Full-time

Salary:             $63,932 – Fire Grade 18        

Deputy Fire Chief will report to and is under limited supervision of the Fire Chief. The Deputy Chief serves as second in command of the department and senior advisor and principal assistant to the Fire Chief. Assists in organizing, directing, supervising, disciplining, and coordinating activities associated with the department. The Deputy Chief assists with ensuring that effective and efficient operational practices, techniques, and procedures are used. The Deputy Chief assists the Fire Chief in long-range departmental strategic and budgetary planning.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Requires high school diploma or GED, and the equivalent of one year of college or specialized vocational training in fire science, firefighting, public administration, or a closely related field. Within four years of promotion, the candidate must possess an associate degree in Fire Science or Emergency Management from a recognized college or university.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A minimum of 5 years of experience within a career fire department. Supervisory experience required. Criminal record free from felony crime conviction, and/or a misdemeanor crime conviction involving theft or giving false information. Must possess a thorough knowledge of the City including but not limited to geography and governmental functions including laws, ordinances, policies, rules, regulations, etc.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS REQUIRED:

Memberships:            Tennessee Fire Chief’s Association membership upon appointment
International Association of Fire Chiefs membership upon appointment

Licenses:                     Valid State of Tennessee Driver’s License
State of Tennessee Emergency Medical Responder License at minimum

Certificates/Certifications:    Tennessee Commission on Firefighting or Nationally Accredited Certifications as follows:

  • Firefighter II
  • Instructor II
  • Incident Safety Officer
  • Fire Officer III
  • Chief Fire Officer Designation through the Commission on Professional Credentialing within two years of appointment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be physically able to operate a variety of firefighting equipment, such as a hacksaw, crescent wrench, chock blocks, hydrant wrench, foam nozzle, salvage cover, straight tip nozzle, ABC fire extinguisher, and various office equipment and supplies, etc. Must also be physically able and licensed to operate a motor vehicle in the state of Tennessee. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or up-to fifty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for physically active work. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of 125 pounds at least one hundred feet. Must be in the good physical condition as determined by NFPA 1582 medical examination.
