Fire Inspector I- Full- time- $25.00 hourly
SALARY: $52,006 with excellent benefits
SUMMARY:
The essential function of the position within the organization is to ensure compliance with City fire codes. The position is responsible for ensuring fire and safety code compliance through inspection of new and existing structures, fire investigations, review of construction plans, public education programs, consultation with the public, and reporting. The position works under general supervision independently developing work methods and sequences.
This position’s primary duties are:
- Performs technical inspections of public, commercial, industrial, residential, and other buildings, and premises to ensure compliance with City fire codes and regulations; prepares required documentation and performs follow-up inspections to ensure corrective action for non-compliance.
- Reviews construction and site plans for fire code and regulation compliance; makes recommendations for changes as needed.
- Conducts fire investigations to determine the cause and origin of fires; collects and preserves physical and photographic evidence as required in suspected arson cases; maintains appropriate records of fire losses and investigations as needed.
- Develops, organizes, and conducts fire prevention/education classes and activities for the public.
- Performs office tasks such as issuing permits for burning and fireworks, preparing grant proposals, performing data entry, or telephoning.
- Gathers and maintains information/data to support periodic and special reports documenting activities for area of responsibility.
- Attends or conducts staff and other professional meetings to exchange information; attends in-service training and technical or professional classes, seminars, or conferences to improve technical or professional skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires associate degree or the equivalent of two years of college or specialized vocational training in fire science or a closely related field. Requires valid Tennessee Driver’s License. Within one year of hire: State of Tennessee Fire Inspector I, Within one year of hire: State of Tennessee Fire Inspector I, Fire Investigation for the first responder, ICS 100, 200,700, and 800, and Hazardous Materials Awareness. Within three years of hire: Certification from TN Commission on Firefighting – Fire Investigator and Public Fire Safety Educator I. Within five years of hire: Residential Fire Sprinkler Inspector/Fire Plans Examiner certification with ICC, NFPA, and Residential Building Inspector certification.
