National CALEA Accreditation
The Sevierville Police Department was Accredited in 1999 becoming the 11th police organization in the State of Tennessee to become accredited. The Department is currently facing re-accreditation with the on-site scheduled for August 2008. Accreditation is a voluntary self-motivated approach for organizations to achieve and maintain high quality service to the community.
The accreditation concept was conceived by the IACP and funded by an LEAA grant. It is controlled by an executive board comprised of IACP, NOBLE, NAS, and PERF members. Accreditation recognizes an agency as conforming to a set of high standards related to a specific discipline. These standards were designed to:
-
Increase the agencies ability to prevent crime.
-
Increase the agencies effectiveness in the delivery of law enforcement services.
-
Increase cooperation and effectiveness among other law enforcement agencies and criminal justice agencies.
-
Increase citizen and employee confidence in the goals, objectives, policies, and practices of the agency.
Benefits of Law Enforcement Accreditation:
-
Demonstrates the commitment of the agency to professionalism
-
Assures the community that its law enforcement agency is committed to a high quality of service
-
Requires an in-depth review of every aspect of an agency's organization
Persons wishing to offer written comments about the Sevierville Police Department's ability to meet the standards for re-accreditation are requested to write: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), 10306 Eaton Place, Suite 320, Fairfax, Virginia, 22030-2201.
